Local Government involvement is vital to nurturing a strong social enterprise sector. Local government can bring the following strengths to a collaborative partnership:
- A citywide network of community organisations, business and corporate partners
- Financial support to the local Hub to offer services to grow social enterprises
- A solid capital base for procuring the services of social enterprise
- A strong corporate image as a community leader that is able to share their experience with community and business alike
- Access to infrastructure and resources that can become readily available to the social enterprise sector
- Provision of strategic direction as a member of the local Hub’s steering group
- Access to expertise in procurement, contracting, marketing and community development
By becoming a Local Government Partner, you are able to develop stronger communities that are resilient, smart and inclusive. Support of social enterprise not only alleviates long-term unemployment through the creation of strong local economic linkages and meaningful employment, but also develops significant social capital and pride across a whole community.
All these businesses exist for the benefit of the community, and operate around terrific social and economic objectives, so I’m proud that a program exists to support their work and that we are part of the Brisbane Social Enterprise Hub.
Brisbane City Council however, does more than just fund the program. Over the past year, Council has increased its contracts and purchases from businesses that generate jobs for people usually excluded from the workforce.
Employees also host workshops to teach social enterprises how to tender for Council contracts. We’re also working with local organisations to identify new opportunities for social enterprise development.
